You can walk down through the fields to Talgarth, which is one mile away. We recommend the Bridge End Inn for amazing steaks from the local Butcher. It’s open every night except Wednesdays. The award-winning Baker’s Table cafe at the Mill (where we get our bread) is fantastic for lunch, coffee and cakes.
A little further afield, the Griffin at Felin Fach (10-15 minutes drive) is one of the best gastropubs in the UK. Best to book on 01874 620111. The River Cafe in Glasbury does great no-fuss Italian food - their crab pasta is my favourite - again best to book on 01497 847007.
In Hay-on-Wye itself there are plenty of great pubs, and if everything is full, there is always the fantastic tapas at Tomatitos where there is no booking.
